A 10-year-old boy in Chicago “in a disturbed state of mind” has been arrested after opening fire on police during a standoff with special forces near his home, officials in the US reported.

They added that the attacker was later arrested and taken to hospital for mental evaluation after Monday’s serious incident in the Beverly area.

Police were called to a disturbance caused by the child in the area, local network ABC 7 Chicago reported.

But when the officers arrived, the boy was standing in front of his entrance, a gun in his hand pointing at them.

Police said they fired rubber bullets into the house, forcing the boy inside, when he fired a gun at them, according to CBS Chicago.

Although only one shot was reported by the juvenile, he had pointed the handgun at officers several times from inside the home.

Due to the attacker’s age and poor mental state, the officers managed to neutralize him with deafening shots and burning spray, the police announced.

“He was a child, we discussed what steps to take given his age and the troubled state he was in,” said local police chief Migdalia Bulnes.

No one was injured in the incident, but the area was cordoned off and blocked for more than an hour.

The gun that fired during the crash was legally owned by the owner and is believed to have been left unsecured at home by him, Sergeant Matt O’Shea said.

The police said they are investigating how the 10-year-old managed to get possession of the weapon.
