The Archdiocese of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York Metropolis condemned the “scandalous” and “sacrilegious” funeral of a transgender chief and activist following outrage from the Catholic group.

In a press releaseRev. Enrique Salvo wrote that the funeral of transgender activist Cecilia Gentili was a “scandal.”

“Thanks to so many who’ve tell us that they share our outrage on the outrageous conduct at a funeral right here at St. Patrick’s Cathedral earlier this week,” Salvo wrote.

The Archdiocese of Manhattan stated the cathedral didn’t know what the funeral would entail when it agreed to host Gentili’s funeral.
