The English national team hero Trevor Francis (69) has passed away. Francis is known as the first British player to be bought for more than a million pounds.

Several British media reported on the death, including The Guardian and the BBC. Francis died Monday morning at his home near Marbella in Spain.

– This comes as a great shock to all of us. We are so sad. He was a legendary footballer, but also an exceptionally nice person, Francis’ family said in a statement taken over by the BBC.

Football England is now in mourning after the death.

Francis became the most expensive British footballer of all time when legendary Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough forked over a million pounds to secure the then Birmingham City player.

It was a record that Francis proudly held to his name.
