A ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, inflicting it to partially collapse and sending automobiles and folks into the water, officers in Maryland mentioned.

“I can affirm that at 1:35 a.m., the Baltimore Metropolis Police Division was notified of a partial bridge collapse, presumably leaving staff within the water, on the Francis Scott Key Bridge,” the Baltimore Police Division mentioned in a press release .

Maryland Transportation Authority mentioned the collapse occurred “on account of a ship assault”.

The container ship Dali, a ship flying the flag of Singapore, collided with the bridge round 1:30 a.m. MarineTraffic, a ship monitoring firm. The roughly 1,000-foot-long ship had left the port of Baltimore about 1 a.m. and was headed to Sri Lanka, the tracker mentioned.

A number of automobiles fell from the bridge on the time of the collapse, the Baltimore Metropolis Fireplace Division mentioned. Work on the bridge was underway in a single day and divers had been looking for no less than seven folks within the water, the division mentioned.

The bridge, a part of Interstate 695, crosses the Patapsco River on the Port of Baltimore.

“All lanes are closed in each instructions resulting from an incident on the I-695 Key Bridge,” MDTA officers mentioned a press release Tuesday round 2am. “Site visitors is being diverted.”
