Personnel from the Office of the Prosecutor for Crimes against the Nation’s Cultural Heritage carried out operations in various parts of the country this Friday, June 2, as part of an investigation into possible trafficking in national treasures.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that six search, inspection, search, and evidence sequestration proceedings were carried out in properties located in Sacatepéquez, Fraijanes, and zone 10 of the capital.

According to the authorities, they are investigating a possible case of trafficking in national treasures, for which several archaeological pieces that were found were confiscated.

These are 143 objects that will be delivered to the Directorate of Registration of Cultural Assets of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, so that they are properly protected while the investigations are carried out.

“One of the properties raided is the Ruta Maya Foundation, in which 143 archaeological pieces were kidnapped,” the Public Ministry detailed.

In addition, the authorities indicate that the pieces could be linked to the case of the American couple Stephanie Allison Jolluck and Giorgio Salvador Rossilli, who were arrested in November 2022 when they were transporting 166 archaeological pieces, of irregular origin, in a vehicle.

Allison Jolluck had already been linked to the process for a similar case, after being arrested at the La Aurora International Airport when she tried to leave the country with two pre-Hispanic pieces.
