Thousands of dead fish have washed up on the shores of a beach in Texas, USA in an unusual phenomenon, as it is reported that it may have been caused by the lack of oxygen in the water.

An extensive cleaning operation has started to remove the fish from the shores of the sea, as the images from the scene showed the gigantic scale of the disaster.

The incident at Bryan Beach began on Friday when fish, mostly menhaden, including some small sharks, started washing up dead on the shore in large numbers.

Officials said the event was caused by a “low water oxygen event,” according to the Texas Department of Wildlife, which they said was caused by warming water.

When fish have low oxygen they start to panic and this reduces their oxygen reserves even more.

Dead fish continued to wash ashore until Sunday as officials said many of the fish had reduced body mass, almost reduced to skeletons.
