Thunderstorms bring flooding and tornadoes

Severe weather will bring associated threats across the Midwest and Northeast over the weekend.

Forecasters said thunderstorms with heavy rain will hit parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center issued a small risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the northern plains and upper Mississippi Valley through Sunday morning.

The rains there are expected to cause local areas of flash flooding.

Iowa and Missouri will experience showers and severe thunderstorms, with a small risk of severe storms over parts of the middle Mississippi Valley.

That area could see hazards including frequent lightning, hail, severe thunderstorms, wind gusts, hail and some tornadoes.

Tornadoes in Mississippi killed one person and injured nearly two dozen others early last week, leaving a trail of destruction.

There is also a threat of severe thunderstorms with gusts of 65 knots or more over parts of the region through Sunday morning.

The Weather Prediction Center also issued a marginal risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley and Lower Mississippi Valley Sunday through Monday morning, and also warned residents about localized flash flooding.

The threat of severe thunderstorms is moving east and will continue across parts of Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee on Sunday.

The Storm Prediction Center issued a low risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Ohio and Tennessee Valley Sunday through Monday morning, with hazards including frequent lightning, a few tornadoes, hail and severe thunderstorms.

There is also a threat of severe thunderstorms there with gusts of 65 knots or more through Monday morning.

While the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, central Appalachian Mountains and the Northeast expect showers and thunderstorms late into Saturday night, showers and thunderstorms are forecast in parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Sunday.

The heat continues for the southern US, including western Texas and New Mexico.

There are extreme heat warnings and heat advisories over southern non-western Texas, southern New Mexico, eastern Oklahoma and southwestern Louisiana.

Extreme heat in the southern states has pushed temperatures into the triple digits.

Texas residents were asked by the state’s power grid operator on Tuesday to voluntarily cut back on electricity because of expected record demand on the system.
