Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the Kremlin late Thursday.

“In my view, the situation is moving towards a solution, although there are still difficulties and problems,” Putin said ahead of the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the Forum of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Putin said one of the areas that needed work was on transport communications, which he said included unresolved issues that were “purely technical in nature.”

“We have covered this topic, the terminology issue, in detail. Behind these terms, of course, requires a proper understanding of the facts and events that will follow the signing of the relevant documents.” ”

Prior to the meeting, Putin held separate talks with Aliyev and Pashinyan, where he discussed bilateral relations between Russia and related countries and normalization issues between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Relations between the two former Soviet republics have been strained since 1991, when the Armenian army occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and seven neighboring regions, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.

In the fall of 2020, during the 44-day conflict, Azerbaijan liberated many cities, villages and settlements from Armenian occupation. The peace agreement brokered by Russia is celebrated as a victory in Azerbaijan.

Despite ongoing peace agreement negotiations between Baku and Yerevan, tensions between neighboring countries have increased in recent months due to the Lachin corridor, which is the only land route that provides Armenia’s access to Karabakh.
