Hours after his trial in the classified documents case in Miami, Florida on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump said he would go after incumbent President Joe Biden if he were re-elected in 2024.
Addressing his supporters in Bedminster, New Jersey, Trump said, “I will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after Joe Biden, the most corrupt president in the history of the United States, and the entire Biden crime family.”
Trump also cited unnamed individuals he holds responsible for undermining elections and borders in the country.
“When I am re-elected and re-elected – we have no choice, we will no longer have a country – I will completely destroy the deep state,” he said.
He described the indictment against him as “the most evil and heinous abuse in the history of our country”.
Supporters sang “Happy Birthday” for the former president, who will turn 77 on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Trump denied 37 charges brought by federal prosecutors for allegedly keeping secret government records after leaving office.
When he was indicted by a Florida grand jury last week, he became the first former U.S. president to face federal charges. He is facing separate state charges regarding his business dealings in New York.
Trump also appealed to Democrats, saying the indictment was intended to distract from an alleged bribery scheme involving the Biden family.
“They want to get away from real espionage and real crime… Let’s go out and blame President Trump so they don’t talk about the $5 million bribe,” he said.
He also criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith, calling him “rogue” and “deranged”.
Trump reiterated that the case against him was politically motivated, an accusation dismissed by Smith, who was commissioned in November by US Attorney General Merrick Garland to independently run the federal investigation into Trump’s seizure of classified documents after the presidency.
