Ukrainians remember Bakhmut, the city of salt and sparkling wine

The city was known far beyond the borders of Ukraine for its sparkling wine. Founded in a huge abandoned gypsum mine in the 1950s, the local winery was one of the largest and best producers of the fizzy drink in the USSR and then independent Ukraine. Its location, about 70 meters underground, made it easier to reach the right temperature for the drink to ferment.
