ANKARA

At a major Muslim American convention, the Muslim community in the United States congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his historic re-election as the country’s president.

Ankara’s Ambassador to Washington, Hasan Murat Mercan, was invited to the stage at the 48th Islamic Union of North America (ICNA) convention held in Baltimore, Maryland, north of Washington DC, on Sunday, following news of Erdogan’s victory.

In his post on his Twitter account on Monday, Mercan said, “I am very happy to be invited to the stage due to the re-election of our president at ICNA’s annual meeting attended by tens of thousands of people. I congratulate our president wholeheartedly.” A video from the conference.

The host of the meeting also said in a video, “Erdogan won the election and we are celebrating it.”

At the event, Mercan was appreciated for her “outstanding community services”.

The Turkish Embassy in Washington said the annual conference, attended by 30,000 people and ending today, provides an opportunity to address the issues facing American Muslims today.

According to unofficial results, President Erdoğan won the race with 52.16 percent of the votes and opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu with 47.84 percent of the votes.

More than 64.1 million Turkish citizens registered to vote, including more than 1.92 million who voted at ballot boxes abroad. Local voter turnout was 85.71% in Sunday’s elections.
