A British man vacationing in Jamaica died after trying to drink 21 cocktails from a bar’s menu, according to reports from the UK.

Timothy Southern, 53, of Staffordshire, England, was vacationing with his family in Saint Ann, Jamaica, in May 2022 when he encountered two Canadian women at a bar attempting to complete a 21-drink challenge to celebrate a birthday. celebrate, according to ITV News.

His family has since criticized the medical treatment he received when they first realized he was ill.

“He was suffocating on his back. I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance,” a family member said according to an inquiry reported by ITV. “He made a gurgling noise. As soon as he lay on his side he vomited. I yelled his name with no answer.

“When the nurse arrived I said an ambulance had been called and she said ‘no’. I thought she would take over. But that wasn’t the case. I noticed he was starting to lose temperature. I checked his pulse and couldn’t find it,” continued the relative.

The nurse reportedly told the family she still had a pulse, and the family member began to “lose it” when she witnessed Southern’s reported treatment.

“I got a full look at his face and I thought he had died. I said ‘Don’t just stand there looking at him, start CPR’. She only gave him chest compressions. Maybe if she had known what she was doing , he might still be here.”

“The service and treatment he received was disgusting,” the family member continued in commenting on the inquest, according to ITV News.

A pathologist in Jamaica’s capital Kingston ruled that Southern died of “acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption”. However, the judicial inquiry into Southern’s toxicology report could take up to three years to reach the UK, according to ITV News.
