Vitamins and nutritional supplements are no guarantee of good health, but they can certainly help you meet the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamins and minerals. If, like many Americans, you find it difficult to get a complete and balanced daily diet, then you should consider taking supplements.

How much do you need?

If you are not deficient in a particular nutrient, your body will usually absorb only about 10 to 15 percent of the nutrients from vitamins and dietary supplements. The remaining 85 percent is excreted in your urine. This means that for every $10.00 you spend on vitamin and nutritional supplements, $8.50 of that can go down the toilet.

Still, there’s no harm in taking one multivitamin a day (a multivitamin that contains 100 percent of the RDI for vitamins and minerals), especially if you’re consuming fewer than 1,600 calories a day. However, nothing can replace a good meal. Eating a balanced diet that meets the RDA is still the most effective way to get all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you need for a healthy body.

recommended daily amounts

Vitamins and nutritional supplements sold in the market can take the form of sole vitamins (i.e. vitamin C only) or multivitamins. Most multivitamins in the US contain only 100 percent of the RDI. The RDA contains 17 nutrients in certain doses; these nutrients include vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, folic acid (folacin), calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iodine, iron, selenium and zinc. It may also contain vitamin K, which helps with blood clotting, but is available by prescription only.

Higher doses of vitamins and nutritional supplements that exceed 100% of the RDI – needed to counteract deficiencies as determined by a doctor – are usually sold as only vitamins or minerals.

Some memories

Always remember that the Food and Drug Administration Board does not regulate the manufacture and sale of vitamin and nutritional supplements. That’s why it’s important to look for a nutritional supplement manufacturer that strictly adheres to GMP standards. GMP compliance ensures that a product is tested for cleanliness and free of contaminants and prescription drugs. It also ensures that a product contains the right amount of ingredients and dosage, based on the Recommended Daily Allowances and as indicated on the label.

You should also refrain from buying dietary supplements that contain additives such as sugar, starch, gluten, silica, and artificial flavors or colors. Supplements from GMP-compliant manufacturers are free of such additives.
