The risk of consumers being hit by burning waffle pieces has prompted Health Canada to issue a recall for a specific waffle iron.
A recall was posted last week for the 5-inch PowerXL Stuffed Wafflizer Waffle Maker due to fire hazards.
It has sold over 350,000 copies in the US, while selling 777 copies in Canada.
“Hot pieces of the wafer or filling may be expelled from the wafer maker during use or when the product is opened, posing a risk of burns to consumers,” the statement said. remember states.
According to the company behind the product, the problem is caused by a problem with the locking mechanism when the waffle iron is too full. If there is too much wafer in the wafer maker, the pressure build-up in the product can cause hot wafer pieces to spray out of the wafer maker when it is unlocked.
Empower Brands, which issued the recall in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, has received 44 incident reports from customers in the U.S., including 34 burn injuries. Three people suffered injuries serious enough to require medical attention.
No injuries have been reported in Canada so far.
The affected specific models are the ESWM02 and ESWM03. Health Canada’s recall includes only the 5 inch ESW02. Consumers can verify that they have an affected model by locating the model number on the rating plate located on a tab on the power cord.
Affected customers should stop using their waffle iron immediately and can contact Empower Brands for a free lockout adapter and instructions on how to repair the waffle iron.
The affected units were sold in Canada from July 2021 to October 2022 and were distributed by Tristar Products Inc. and Spectrum Brands Canada, Inc.
The waffle irons come in 11 colors, three of which were sold in Canada: black, cinnamon, and slate.
