Governor Jay Inslee signed a bill in Washington on Tuesday to ban the sale, manufacture, and import of assault weapons, making it the 10th US state to enforce such a ban.

In a tweet, Inslee said that Washington does not and will not accept gun violence as normal.

“The bill to ban the sale of assault weapons, training requirements and waiting time, and increasing the accountability of manufacturers and retailers will save lives,” he wrote.

On April 19, the state House of Representatives approved the ban on the sale of assault weapons by a vote of 42 to 56.

According to reports, weapons manufacturers will be allowed to sell their current inventory in stock before January 1, 2023, as part of the change.

The White House said the action would make the state “safer” and “more secure.”

“President (Joe) Biden appreciates the leadership of Washington Governor Jay Inslee and legislative leaders, as well as those defending survivors and elected officials who have fought for years to make the present a reality,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at a news conference.

Other states that ban assault weapons are California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Delaware, Washington, DC, and Illinois.

Biden has long voiced his support for banning offensive weapons as the United States continues to grapple with gun violence.
