A robber in England was sentenced this week to three years in prison for attempted robbery, but it was only thanks to his victim’s quick thinking that he ended up in police custody in the first place.

“It wasn’t the hardest arrest we’ve ever made. To be honest, it was an open and closed case,” Durham Constabulary Detective Paul Mawson told The Northern Echo.

Martin Trimble, 30, walked into a convenience store in Durham City last month with a knife.

He grabbed a four-pack of beer and used his knife to threaten the shop owner. Instead of letting Trimble walk away, the store owner ran out and closed the door, holding it tight and locking his thief in.

Trimble again attempted to avoid capture by breaking the door from the store owner’s grasp and slipping out before the shutter was fully lowered.
