A heroic confrontation captured on surveillance footage earlier this week shows a brave miniature pig attacking a black bear that broke into her family’s farm.

Security footage from the stable from early Sunday morning shows the pig, named Barbie-Q, standing several inches in front of the bear as it slowly approaches.

She is then seen running forward, forcing the bear to run back.

Owner Crystal Walls and her husband were out at the time with their four dogs, who normally defend the farm.

When her house sitter called to let them know their gate had been breached, the couple hurried home and reviewed the security footage.

“Look, there was our mini-pig Barbie-Q fighting a bear,” Walls said Tuesday on CBC’s All Points West.

A pet pig from Sooke, BC attacked a bear that had broken into the pet pen. Barbie-Q’s owner said she looked like she was protecting the other animals huddled against the fence.

And the unlikely fight resulted in an even more unlikely winner. The bear reclined on its butt before taking off about 30 minutes later.

“He certainly didn’t fight Barbie. He got out of the way,” Walls said.

Walls said it looked like Barbie-Q was trying to herd their other animals back into their pen, rushing to get back at them every time they got too close to the bear.

“It was incredible to watch.”

Barbie-Q was rewarded for her service with a bowl of fruit salad and lots of belly rubs.

A bear in Sooke took no chances when it confronted a pig named Barbie Q. Jason D’Souza talked to Barbie Q’s human, Crystal Walls.

A spoiled pig with a spicy side

Walls said this attack doesn’t suit her beloved Barbie-Q, who is normally afraid of the family’s goats and will run away if they get too close.

“I didn’t think something like this was so big that she would even try to charge it.”

The six-year-old pig has led a sheltered life.

She grew up in the family’s home for her first three years of life, sleeping in their beds, going camping with them, and even attending neighborhood events with them.

Barbie-Q was moved outside to the barn when her younger brother (Bacon) Bits joined the family.

“Everywhere we went with the dogs, she went with us,” Walls said, adding that Barbie-Q is an affectionate pig who loves to kiss and cuddle her owner.

But Walls says Barbie-Q can be feisty at times, and her cocky nature came out on Sunday morning.

Christy Brookes, who was babysitting the family at the time, told CHEK News that she noticed the pig likes to be in charge.

“She will try to be the boss of everyone. She absolutely bosses me,” Brookes said.

But she says Barbie-Q deserves the recognition she’s getting for her valiant efforts.

“I love her even more. She’s a star.”
