“Be part of the family… we are looking for cooks and waiters”, “Join the family… in the kitchen, waiter and pizzeria areas”; “You are the icing on the cake that we are looking for, come to the job fair and work with us.” These are some of the job offers that have abounded in recent weeks.

Everything indicates that after the pandemic, the hotel and restaurant sector is experiencing a recovery, and proof of this, there is a growing demand for the labor of cooks, waiters, and dependents of fast food stands and ice cream parlors.

“The demand for different jobs in the restaurant sector is due to the growth, dynamism and expansion of the brands,” said Carmen Rosa Barillas, executive director of the Gremial of Restaurants and Food Processors (Gregua), attached to the Chamber of Industry of Guatemala (CIG).

For his part, Abraham Az Palermo, representative of the Restaurant Union (Grega Gt), attached to the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce (CCG), at the same time that the food sector registers a recovery, they also experience a certain shortage of labor work for the positions of cooks, waiters and shop assistants.

“After the pandemic, many people who lost their jobs in the hotel and restaurant industry were very impacted and for that reason, many of them decided to start a business. Some started their own business, others worked in the home office and many dedicated themselves to home deliveries and also stayed working in courier services,” argued Az Palermo.

“It must also be recognized that, just as many restaurants closed (during the pandemic), others opened (now) and that has also had an impact with the few people who decided to continue in this industry,” added the representative of GregGt), who He assured that as a union they promote labor training programs in this sector.

Restaurants also consider that a greater supply of jobs in the industry for this time also responds to the fact that new restaurants or bars begin to open now to be ready for the end of the year, a high time for the sector.

Recently, representatives of the restaurant and food union confirmed that many food businesses and food chains have begun to strengthen the businesses that survived the pandemic and others have opened new branches or even expanded their operations to other countries.
