According to her, the child, whom she calls “V,” suffers from a severe case of ADHD, may have “decreased mental capacity,” and feels more like a seven- or eight-year-old than an eleven-year-old. old.

For her part, the girl was excited to travel, but barely knew the man and would leave in a week. In the meantime, to add to the concern, the poster said the girl would be camping for four days with a man from her church and would return when it was time to leave for a month with the truck driver.

But red flags turned to outright alarm when V’s mother revealed that her husband’s stepfather had previously been convicted of sexually abusing three children under the age of 10, but was still allowed to spend time with his grandchildren, including the girl.
All the information shared led her to believe that the family put their daughter at risk of being violated.
“A phone call to CPS feels necessary and urgent to me. However, Big Brothers/Big Sisters has stated that they do not have enough evidence to report themselves, which makes me doubt myself,” she explained.
With no evidence of actual abuse or that the child was in immediate danger, she wondered if she was overreacting and reasoned that she found the situation “gross” and “unnatural.” But readers begged her to take the situation seriously and report it. They advised her to contact Child Protection (CPS), the police and even call a hotline report possible human trafficking.

After receiving a ton of feedback, the mentor took the overwhelming advice and contacted CPS.

They called me back shortly afterwards and let me guess as best I could where V would be that afternoon, which was a huge relief as it meant they had marked the report as urgent on their part.

Later that same day, V’s parents told the woman that the girl would be skipping the trip because they had been reported to CPS. The agency reiterated that it was inappropriate for an 11-year-old to travel across the country with someone they are not related to. According to her, it sounded like the camping trip was also off the table.
Police couldn’t intervene because no crime had yet been committed, but the woman had them on speed dial for the moment the girl was in danger. She also contacted the transportation company to clarify their policies for drivers traveling with passengers and likely warn them about their employee.

She resolved any questions as to why she didn’t report the situation right away, stating that she had to go through proper protocol for her job. “There are a lot of relationships and fragile trust structures at play, along with the well-being of other children in the household that we had to be aware of,” she explained.

Parents must prioritize the safety of their children no matter what.
Whenever my parents felt like something wasn’t right as a kid, I just didn’t go. Parents have a duty to keep out of the reach of their children anything that could endanger them. They certainly shouldn’t take actions they know can lure predators to their child.
Once a child has been abused, the chance to keep them away the resulting trauma and despair is gone.
