Sergeant Jorge Burquet said it shortly before he died. They investigate a horse racing and illegal gambling mafia.

The murder of Gendarmerie sergeant Jorge Orlando Burquet (40), in the Corrientes town of Alvear, would be related to crossed accusations that he had just a few days before with the man who is being held for the crime. These claims were embodied in presentations they made at the town police station on April 1.

Burquet, who was on medical leave from the force, demanded from Raúl Humberto “Toco” Klug (51) a horse and the blanket that is used in studs to cover the animals.

One version indicates that the gendarme held Klug responsible for the death of one of his racehorses. The latter, meanwhile, maintained in his presentation that the sergeant never paid him for a series of jobs for an amount close to 200,000 pesos.

Investigators have already ordered tests on the cell phones of the victim and the only detainee who has the case so far. They believe that there they can find information that could be key to the clarification of the murder.

Gendarme Jorge Orlando Burquet (40), assassinated in Corrientes.

A Burquet employee has already testified before the Police and there he recounted how the non-commissioned officer was ambushed on Saturday night in the stud he had on the outskirts of Alvear.

The man said that several hooded men held a gun on him at the stud and forced him to open his cell phone to send a message to the gendarme.

A while later, Burquet arrived in his car, a Fiat Siena, and as soon as he stopped the march, he was surrounded, pointed with a 16-gauge shotgun and shot down.

The victim, already tied up with zip ties, was taken inside the stud, while his employee was left outside, sitting in a car with one of the men guarding him from the back seat.

According to his account, a few minutes later the noises of a fight were heard inside the stable. It was then that the criminal neglected him to go see what was happening, since several shots had been heard.

Burquet’s employee took advantage of those seconds to start the car and quickly head to a Gendarmerie section that is about two kilometers away.

When a patrol arrived at the scene, several men escaped into an area of vegetation, while Burquet left the stud holding his abdomen, where he had a huge wound from a stab wound.

The incriminating sentence

The sergeant knew that the wound was serious and that he could die. “If something happens to me, it was Toco Klug with the Brazilians,” he said as his compañeros from the force loaded him into the truck to take him to the Alvear hospital.

Burquet received the first cures there and was urgently referred to the hospital in Santo Tomé, where he finally died. In addition to the jab that affected his spleen, the gendarme had a bullet impact on one of his wrists.

In the stud there were two horses and expensive veterinary drugs. In the door of a bathroom, pellets were found that came from a 16-gauge shotgun that did not appear at the scene.

The caliber was determined because three cartridges were found: one unloaded, another without firing, and the third struck but with its charge intact. A bullet, possibly a .38 caliber, was also seized, sources linked to the investigation said.

Burquet was a native of Formosa but had been in Corrientes for several years, where he had set up a stud dedicated to preparing racehorses. In the place there were two purebred animals, and therefore of very high value, the investigators admitted.

The gendarme not only participated in the stable races with his horses, but was a regular bettor in this type of competition. Klug would also be related to the world of turf.

The main suspect in the crime, either as material or intellectual author, was captured in the same way that Burquet was taken to his stud: from the Alvear police station they summoned him with an excuse, but as soon as the man crossed the door, he was arrested at the disposal of the prosecutor Facundo Cabral.
