In an unexpected turn, the Premier League Referees College has recognized human error in the match between Tottenham and Liverpool.
In particular, it has become evident that Luis Díaz’s goal, initially disallowed, should have been validated by the VAR in the first half of the match, when the score was tied at zero. This goal would have given a crucial advantage to Liverpool, who were already at a numerical disadvantage due to the sending off of Curtis Jones.
Although the line assistant disallowed the goal, the images reviewed by the VAR clearly showed that Luis Díaz was in a regular position. Surprisingly, the VAR chose to uphold the referee’s original decision, a move that sparked controversy and questions.
The Premier League Referees College issued an official statement on the matter, acknowledging the seriousness of the error: “The PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) recognizes that a significant error was made during the first half of the match between Tottenham and Liverpool. ”.

Luis Díaz’s disallowed goal was due to a clear and obvious error on the part of the referees on the field. It should have been validated with the intervention of the VAR. This recognition of the ruling has generated intense debate in the football world, as Liverpool were affected not only by the goal being incorrectly disallowed, but also by the subsequent injury-time defeat due to an own goal by Joel Matip. The final minutes of the match were played with only nine players on the field by Liverpool, which increased the frustration of the team’s fans and coaching staff.
