The Delegation of the European Union (EU), together with the embassies of Germany, Spain, France, Italy and Sweden, with representation in Guatemala, as well as the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, issued separate statements asking for respect to the integrity of the General Elections in Guatemala 2023.

The EU expressed that, according to its preliminary statement of June 27 and in line with its statement of July 1 published by the Electoral Observation Mission (MOE-UE), after the recent ruling of the Constitutional Court (CC) , “urges the Guatemalan institutions and political parties to respect the integrity of the electoral process and the will of the citizens clearly manifested in the June 25 elections.”

On the night of Saturday, June 1, the CC ruled on an amparo filed by several parties, through which it ordered, among other things, to repeat the hearings to review the tally sheets of the Electoral Boards of the Department of Guatemala (JEDG) and Electoral Board of the Central District (JEDC).

“Both the conclusions of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), as well as the observations of international electoral observation organizations, have highlighted the integrity of the electoral process in accordance with Guatemalan law,” the EU statement read.

“The European Union expresses its full support for Guatemalan democracy and trusts that the second round of elections can be held as normal,” he added.

US: ‘deeply concerned’

Around the same time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement which he directly signed, saying he was “deeply concerned” about attempts to interfere in the election results.

“The United States supports the constitutional right of the Guatemalan people to choose their leaders through free and fair elections. We are deeply concerned about the ongoing efforts to interfere with the outcome of the June 25 election,” Blinken wrote on his personal Twitter account, as part of his statement.

“Actions to interfere with the outcome of the elections violate the spirit of the Guatemalan constitution and threaten the legitimacy of its democratic process,” the statement from the US Secretary of State added.
