Invariably, in each electoral process, not only of the democratic era, but in all those that have been carried out throughout the seven decades of existence of Prensa Libre, accusations, whining and lies arise from party leaders, caudillos or aspirants. to public officials, who allege alleged partiality or favoritism in the coverage of each event, especially when they face adverse circumstances.

Guatemalan citizenship is the raison d’être of our information service mission. Your confidence, endorsed daily, in each edition, in each news, constitutes the greatest value and therefore we must repay it with independent, honest and dignified work. That is the motto of our founders, which remains valid and is put to the test on a daily basis. We work daily for citizens and strive to listen, reflect and publish their needs and dreams, which are especially relevant at election time.

Many politicians, especially those with improvised messianic airs, claim the power to absolutize about good and bad, to concoct polarizations at convenience and to victimize themselves at convenience, even though such stratagems are revealed, before citizen intelligence, by their own discursive contradictions, conceptual gaps, ideological limbos and ethical deviations. It is easier to blame the press than to accept misjudgments, wrong decisions and strategic failures. It is symptomatic. The person who is like this during the candidacy and reaches a position, has a serious risk of falling into the same despotisms that he criticizes from the plain or worse, especially if it is about egomaniacs who believe they are self-sufficient, but need the vote of the most humble, thanks to democracy.

For this reason, at Prensa Libre, since 1951 we have affirmed with conviction: “We owe ourselves to Guatemala and to the Guatemalans.” Paraphrasing that first editorial, we can continue to proclaim that we go out on the public stage without favoritism or hostility, equidistant from any political movement and always attentive to verifying the legitimate exercise of the powers conferred on public officials, whether elected or appointed.

“What concerns and interests an independent newspaper like Prensa Libre in this electoral debate is the safeguarding of freedom, of the right to fair treatment for all Guatemalans, within the framework of democracy. We are not interested in people, but in programs. That is why we ratify here, jointly so that there is no vestige of doubt, that we will not take sides, that we will not support any candidate, that we will maintain the objectivity and impartiality of information and opinion at any cost, to the best of our abilities,” it reads. the editorial of November 13, 1962, which constitutes a constant reminder of the ideal of truthful service to our readers and audiences in electoral processes.

We respect the institutional framework and advocate for the prevalence of the rule of law, especially freedom of expression, including that of detractors, who throughout the country’s history have been exposed, sometimes due to their own imprudence. As journalism professionals, we always uphold the dream of a better Guatemala, with development and a dignified life for its inhabitants. It is what we seek, claim and demand on a daily basis. That is why we can clearly affirm that in each electoral period we support someone who can change the future of the country: the noble people of Guatemala.
